The Spikes for Tykes Volleyball Tournament started as the 2008 RPJ Summer Volleyball Tournament. Fourteen teams competed in last year’s tournament at the Manoa District Park Gym, and the Rising Phoenix Jaycees – also known as RPJ – held the tournament to raise funds for its Keiki Movie Day, a project that sponsors a day of fun and games at the movies for keiki.
Keiki Movie Day began in 2007, and expanded in 2008 to include children and families from Shriner’s Hospital, Special Olympics and the Kaulukoa Volleyball Club. We hope to expand the Keiki Movie Day project to include mentorship and scholarship opportunities as well as providing a safe venue for family fun. All monies generated by the tournament goes toward Keiki Movie Day.
This year’s tournament will also feature a mini one-stop-shop volleyball fair with uniform and volleyball equipment vendors as well as massage therapists and physical trainers. There will also be food from the Chun Wah Kam Noodle Factory for sale from the gym’s concession booth.
